About the property
Accommodating just 28 guests, this all-inclusive private island lodge is set within the Great Barrier Reef, offering an exclusive and highly personalised tropical escape.
With only 14 rooms, suites and villas, Orpheus Island delivers a rare sense of seclusion and untouched natural beauty, stretching across 11 kilometres of pristine turquoise coastline.
The island itself spans more than 1,000 hectares of protected national park and is encircled by a pristine fringing reef, easily accessible directly from the shoreline.
The island lodge features a central pavilion with bar and alfresco dining, a restaurant, a reading room, Gwandalan Day Spa, and a striking 25m x 13m infinity pool overlooking the Coral Sea.
All stays include three gourmet meals prepared daily by chef Winston Fong and his team, use of water sports equipment, a curated selection of wines, beers, spirits and soft beverages, as well as a daily signature island experience.
Great Barrier Reef Resort
This idyllic island provides unrivalled access to the untouched Great Barrier Reef. Its principal dive sites are home to approximately 1,100 of the 1,500 species of fish found across the reef. The surrounding waters offer exceptional fishing and vibrant marine ecosystems. Guests can explore the reef through personalised snorkelling or diving experiences, discovering an extraordinary underwater world defined by clarity, colour and biodiversity.
The Weather
Orpheus Island enjoys a warm tropical climate with an average temperature of 27°C (80°F) throughout the year. Water temperatures range from around 21°C (69°F) in winter to 29°C (84°F) in summer. The wet season typically runs from November to April and may bring occasional rainfall. During the cooler, drier months from May to October, south-easterly winds create pleasantly warm conditions with reduced humidity and abundant sunshine.
Friendship with the Reef
The Great Barrier Reef supports one third of the world’s coral species and hosts an extraordinary diversity of marine life. While the reef surrounding Orpheus Island remains in excellent condition, some areas have been impacted by coral bleaching, cyclones and the coral-eating Crown of Thorns starfish. The lodge is deeply committed to reef protection and conservation, actively investing in preservation initiatives for future generations. Partnerships include research support with James Cook University to address Crown of Thorns impacts, collaboration with the Orpheus Island Research Station on reef recovery after cyclones, and ongoing work with Great Barrier Reef Legacy to better understand coral bleaching and reef adaptation. All guest experiences align with Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority regulations, ensuring responsible interaction with the world’s largest living organism. Nature lovers can enjoy remarkable wildlife encounters year-round across the island.
Our Villa is respectful, protective and proud of the reef and is investing in the preservation of this exquisite organism.
