This Luxury Bali Villa is an iconic garden estate bordered by rice fields in Umalas, just north of Seminyak on Bali’s south-western coast. Featured in many books and magazines on Bali style, its three residences sit in their own well-screened gardens within the 4,000sqm estate, which is served by a staff of 15. The two- and three-bedroom villas can be rented separately or together with the third – a two-bedroom cottage with additional child’s or nanny’s room. Multiple families and large groups (up to 15) will appreciate the fine balance of privacy, community spirit, and space accorded by reserving all three.
About The Villa
The Villa is an architectural tour de force. Its dramatically pitched roofs of ironwood shingle, split levels, and strongly angled walls sculpt the three-bedroom residence into interesting and unusual living spaces and create intimate corners. Strong, clean lines, a simple palette of ivory and grey, and an interplay of polished teakwood, Palimanan and lava stone create contemporary interiors that flow seamlessly into the surrounding landscape.
Softening the angular geometry of the main house, the huge lawn of silky soft Japanese grass unfurls towards the half-moon swimming pool with sun-trap terrace and shaded balé. Stately travellers palms, fragrant frangipani and parrot’s beak heliconia bring birds and butterflies to the garden, and rice terraces can be glimpsed beyond the bougainvillea perimeter hedge.
At night the villa is magical; soft lighting casts a golden glow on the gleaming teakwood floors and cocooning roofs, and the garden sparkles with lights in the shape of mini shingle-roofed balés. It’s romantic, intimate and utterly alluring; the only sounds in the fragrant night air are the songs of cicadas.
Stroll down the garden path, past an imposing Saraswati statue emerging from a single piece of wood, and the magic of the villa’s split-level design is fully revealed. Wedged under the wings of the larger of the two overlapping roofs, a cosy mezzanine-level TV/reading area floats above the large yet intimate, open-to-garden living space. A few steps down is the dining area, beyond which is the western-style kitchen with separate staff entrance. A light, glass-capped corridor lined with fossils and weather-sculpted stone blocks leads off the living room to the guest cloakroom, two guest bedrooms and the master bedroom suite.
Villa’s magnificent split-level living space features comfortably upholstered L-shaped seating flanking the triangular apex opening to the garden. A massive stone slab serves as a coffee table, and weathered woodcarvings, textiles and tribal artefacts rise from the expanse of polished teak floor.
Shallow V-shaped steps lead to the dining area defined by an angled wall of Palimanan stone, where a table for eight looks onto tall Traveller’s Palms. (The kitchen is conveniently next door but out of sight.)
The mezzanine level suspended above the living space creates a cosy corner for flipping through a book or watching a film. This intimate space is furnished with comfortable seating and equipped with cable television, DVD player and a CD player.
The poolside terrace is the perfect spot for languishing in the sun or retiring to the shade of the balé. And the manicured lawn is just the place for enjoying a barbecue or a Balinese buffet under the stars; an all-weather table for eight can be set up on request.
The large two-level master bedroom here is furnished with a four-poster king-size bed and has sliding doors onto a private courtyard. A few steps down, the dressing area opens to an ensuite bathroom with walk-in shower and large circular jacuzzi bathtub overlooking a private garden.
The two guestrooms – one furnished with a four-poster king-size bed, the other with a queen bed – share an ensuite bathroom with twin black granite basins and a large shower. All three air-conditioned bedrooms have warm teakwood floors and soothing mood lighting.
